History

This city, Bradenton, was founded in the 1840s. This city was named after an early settler, Joseph Braden. Braden came to the Bradenton area to plant sugar. He then built a castle in 1854, and the remnants of this castle are still around today. The community then started to develop as a winter resort for those who wanted to escape the cold and move to Florida. Another reason behind Bradenton's growth was the fact that it was known to be the shipping center for farm produce.

Bradenton was officially established in 1903. However, it didn't end there. In 1947, the city merged with its neighboring town, Manatee, to form the whole city.

Before Joseph Braden, the tribe Calusa originally inhabited the land. Because of artifacts that have been found throughout the years, experts say that the local tribe was present 2,000 years before the area was ever discovered. Calusa was known as the "shell Indians." The people used shells for everything they ever needed. From tools, jewelry, you name it. Most of the tribe was sailors and expert crafters. The tribe died out in the late 1700s due to conflict and diseases.
